《義勇軍進行曲》最早是電影《風云兒女》的主題曲。1934年秋，田漢為該片寫了一首長詩，其中最后一節詩稿被選為主題歌《義勇軍進行曲》的歌詞，歌詞寫完后不久，田漢被國民黨當局逮捕入獄。
1935年2月，導演許幸之接手《風云兒女》的拍攝，不久后，去監獄里探監的同志輾轉帶來了田漢在獄中寫在香煙盒包裝紙背面的歌詞，即《義勇軍進行曲》的原始手稿。
