書架上一直有本柯林斯（Collins）出品的《伊索寓言》（Aesop's Fables ） ， 最近才看完 。

《伊索寓言》的來龍去脈不在此贅述 ， 百度一下你就知道 。 我手頭的這本全書 300 多頁 ， 收集了 300 多個寓言故事 。 每個故事只有 1-2 段 ， 100-200 字左右 ， 讀起來很輕松 ， 適合剛開始讀英文書的成年人練手 ， 也適合當作中小學生的課外讀物 。
fable 的特點書在序言中總結為：
The construction of a fable involves a minute attention to (1) the narration itself; (2) the deduction of the moral; and (3) a careful maintenance of the individual characteristics of the factious personages introduced into it.
寓言的特點是直白 ， 沒太多細節 ， 也沒有賣關子 。 講個故事 ， 說個理兒 ， 不拖泥不帶水 。因此我們可以學習如何用精簡的語言講好一個故事 。
比如 ， 《龜兔賽跑》都聽過 ， 你會如何用英文講這個故事呢？ 書中的版本可以適當作為參考 ， 請先認真一字字讀完下面這段英文：
The Hare and the Tortoise
A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal. On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortosie never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep. At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.
Slow but steady wins the race.
怎么樣？是不是沒你想得那么簡單好讀？這本書中的寓言風格大概就是這樣 ， 我們可以觀察到：
1）整體語言風格偏正式
這段故事中就出現了 ridicule/swift/assertion/assent/fatigue 這些偏正式的詞匯 。
2）整體語言簡潔 ， 沒有過多的修飾和細節
語法上大量使用從句和非謂語動詞 ， 讓信息更緊湊 。 這段話一共 7 句 ， 只有 On the day appointed for the race the two started together 和 Slow but steady wins the race 是簡單句 。
這樣看來 ， 語言雖短 ， 五臟俱全 ， 是學英文的好材料——不認識的詞 ， 去查；不懂的語法結構 ， 去搜 。 我覺得它比《新概念》系列更有趣 ， 有些地方值得直接背下來 ， 比如上面出現的：

  • assent to the proposal（習慣搭配）
  • Tortosie never for a moment stopped（習語表達）
  • Slow but/and steady wins the race（常見說法）
我上面說 ， 書中的英文版本「可以適當作為參考」 ， 不必照單全收 。 我們可以讀完故事后 ， 簡單分析書中的語言點 ， 然后自己用英文講一遍 ， 爭取用上幾個書中的表達（比如 Slow but/and steady wins the race） ， 這也是練習口語的好方法 。
書中有很多故事我們早就很熟悉 ， 比如小學課本上的《烏鴉喝水》：

語句緊湊 ， 結構簡單工整 ， 用 perishing
